Natural Environment of Aggelochori lagoon

The site is included in the European Ecological Network NATURA 2000, with the following code names:
• GR1220005- Special Protection Area (SPA) for avifauna
• GR1220005- Special Area of Conservation

The area is important as a breeding, feeding and resting area for more than 32 bird species (, 206 kb), including protected, as well as endangered ones. Moreover, Numenius tenuirostris (Slender-billed Curlew) and Phalacrocorax pygmeus (Pygmy Cormorant) are included in the list of priority bird species for funding under Life. 

11 habitat types  (, 106 kb) of Annex I (92/43/EEC) were recorded in the area, two of which are priority habitat types.

These two are marine habitat types: 1150* (Coastal lagoons) and 1510* (Mediterranean salt steppes – Limonietalia), the restoration of which is a main objective of “Accolagoons” project.

As regards to species of Annex II of 92/43/EEC, found in this site, we mention the fish species Aphanius fasciatus. Other important fish species: Syngnathus abaster (black-striped pipefish).
